Week 4: Community
I’ve never really had to start over. Before this year I had lived in Minnesota my whole life. Same house growing up. Never moved. Then I moved to Colorado. And then Hawaii. All within less than a year. That’s a lot of change and starting over for a gal who hadn’t done much of that in 32 years of life.
It can be hard living on an island. There really is such a thing as island fever. Of course I miss everyone. I miss out on a lot by living in Hawaii. I am well aware of that. I miss my true friends and being able to call them up to easily hang out.
The other perspective is it’s hard to get close to people here as you never know how long they will stay. Once you get close with folks they may wind up moving back to the mainland. That makes me sad.
Finding my community is a focus for me to stay connected and feel at home. I love meeting and collaborating with people that inspire me and our relationship helps us both grow into better people.
I strive to surround myself with like-minded people and finding my tribe/community has me motivated this week!
Fitness Community
– Run group: My friend is a native of Maui and very well connected in the running community. She started a casual Sunday run group last weekend and it’s turning into a weekly event! Yesterday nine of us met at Oluwalu General Store and we all ran our own paces and distances. We were going to have a potluck brunch at the beach but the winds were INSANE. We called off the beach day but still so proud we all ran in those crazy conditions. It helps to meet up with a group to hold yourself accountable! If you’re in Maui feel free to meet up on Sundays at 7:30am – location changes every week. Let’s RUN this island!

More the Merrier!
– Maui CrossFit Extreme: One week in! It can be beyond intimidating to start CrossFit as everything is very technical. You want to make sure you learn every move correctly from the beginning so you can prevent injury. But everyone has been super welcoming and helpful, which makes me feel much better! I can tell everyone is truly ohana too as they support each other with nutrition challenges and actually get together outside of CrossFit. Can’t wait to hang out more with these like-minded crazy athletes!

CrossFit Ohana!
– Body in Balance: Now that I have been teaching TRX for a few months I am starting to build my regulars – and it’s so much fun! I love seeing everyone’s progress and actually getting to know each person. Their goals, ways to push them, and simply just getting to know them as people. Group fitness should be about supporting and pushing one another and we have a good thing going. Come join in the fun Thursdays at 5pm. Locals get their first week free!

Adventure Community
– Skyline Eco-Adventures: Part of my job as Social Media Strategist and Blogger for the company is sharing the real Maui with the public. This means I need to first-hand explore the beaches, and hikes, and various adventures of the island. It has been super fun exploring with my co-worker Cody as he was born in Maui and knows the island well. He is an amazing photographer and videographer and cannot wait to see the footage we can produce of magical Maui!
– Maui Wave Riders: What an awesome place! I rented a surfboard from them one day and fell in love with their brand. All about customer service and fun people work there! Cannot wait to try out a lesson with them!
– Maui True North: Brett is awesome! He took me tandem kiteboarding and I had the time of my life! Next adventure we want to do is mountain bike the Skyline Trail up on Haleakala! Highly recommend him if you’re looking for a local Maui adventure!
Maui Community
– Organization of the Month – Every month this year Skyline is featuring a different organization. I plan to learn as much as I can by communicating with members at each and finding out what volunteer opportunities are available. By getting involved with the community I will be able to learn more about Hawaiian culture and help make keep Maui the special island it is.
– Getting involved – Between Hawaiian born friends, Facebook groups, meetings, and petitions there are numerous ways to learn more about the culture and get involved to make a difference in the community. Really looking forward to this aspect as my heart pulled me here for a reason!
