Ooooh my goodness did I have a ridiculously fun time in Maui, Hawaii! This was my first ever solo trip and it was quite the adventure. Speaking of adventure, if you love getting out there and exploring the best-of-the-best at whatever destination you’re at – well you are my cup a tea! Or my new fav Hawaiian drink – POG (Passionfruit, Orange, Guava) – YOM!
First of all, if you are a first-timer or have been many times, the book Maui Revealed is a must. They are already on their seventh edition as they make every attempt to keep up-to-date and fresh. This book is an honest recap of everything you need and want to know about visiting Maui. A MUST.

This list is for YOU my favorite adrenaline seeker 😉
Top 5 Must-Do Adventures on Maui, Hawaii
My absolute favorite thing that I did was take a surfing lesson. This was not just any old lesson. I had done one of those with a group nine years ago and it was fun – but packed – and rushed. My Airbnb guy, Sean, happens to own an amazing company, Epic Maui Hikes. They offer all sorts of adventures that are definitely more personal and put on by a local that knows what he/she is doing. I was drawn to their “Surfing Adventure” as I did not want a typical tourist group lesson (blah).
My guide for the day was Lucas and he took me to where the waves were best that day (for a second timer ha), which was close to Ukumehame Beach State Park. It was SOOO nice to have our own private beach area. Not only did this prevent me from running in to anyone but it also made me feel more comfortable as no one was watching and laughing at me HA!
My Surf Guide – Lucas
Lucas is absolutely incredible. Born in Brazil and has lived all over the world (Florida, Australia, now Maui). Not only is he an incredible surfer but an incredible human being. Such a genuinely happy and positive person who sees the good in all. He made me feel completely comfortable and confident in my abilities to get better with each wave.
If you want to try surfing for real then I completely recommend taking a surf lesson from him. Also check out the rest of the adventures that Epic Maui Hikes has to offer. Can’t go wrong!!
Well…except forgetting to put your hands up when jumping off the board and having the surfboard hit you in the eye. Didn’t see that wave comin ha! Well worth my first black eye. And kinda like free “smoky eye” makeup – right? 😉
Well Worth My 1st Black Eye!
Claimed as “Maui’s most epic drive”, the Road to Hana is a definitely must-do on Maui. There are 620 curves and 59 bridges along this journey. Yes, the thought of it makes my stomach flip. In fact I did not feel well from the first hour of this road. If I were to plan ahead I would get those Dramamine patches you put behind your ears. Since I knew I would be traveling this long drive solo I definitely didn’t want to be drowsy!

The app points out 5 “must stops”, a few more suggestions, and also provides history and hiliarity. Yes – I found myself chuckling with the app man. I really shouldn’t be alone for too long…

More details to come on my specific experience – but absolutely:

3. Standup Paddleboarding (SUP)
Another of of my favorites. I have been a few times in Minnesota but nothing compares to whale watching on a SUP in the ocean – DUH! It was seriously so relaxing out there. Amazing view of Maui from another perspective.
1st Time Standup Paddleboarding on the Ocean!
Looking for Whales
Heading in to shore was a whoooole other story. We knew the waves we bad that day but holy smokes. Sean tried to prepare me for the worst but no such luck. As I was paddling in a huge wave came from behind and flipped the back of my board up and over my head. Well since my ankle was attached it lurched me under the waves and felt like an eternity down there!
Thankfully I have been swimming lately and have always been able to hold my breath for awhile. I tend to stay calm and not panic in intense situations too. THANK GOODNESS because it happened AGAIN with the next wave. There I went tumbling all over the ocean floor.
I spose the most embarrassing part was when my top AND bottoms came off of their respective areas. Numerous people were running towards me from the beach. I guess I know how to make a beach entrance 😉
Yep I could get used to this!
4. Whale Watching
One of the group wedding festivities in Lahaina was a whale watching boat cruise. Pacific Whale Foundation is incredible as every staff member has a background in marine biology. They all genuinely care about the whales and are full of fun knowledge.
Whale Watching with the Bride-to-be!
We had the chance to see a ton of whales during the two-hour excursion. I had never seen a whale before so I found this especially exciting! What amazing creatures. They even put a microphone in the water so we could listen to the sing. Such amazing noises!

5. Haleakala – Sunrise or Sunset
Unfortunately I did not have time to do this on my short trip. I’ve heard sunrise is absolutely freezing but so breathtaking when the sun rises and you realize you are looking down at the clouds.
I’ve heard both good and bad things about biking Haleakala. What I took away is that it is fun for those that don’t normally bike but may be slow and a waste of time for those that are “bikers”. Don’t blame the messenger. Just what I saw from my research. See for yourself!
I could have squuuezed sunset it in before heading to the airport but I figured – hey – I’ll be back soon enough…because…oh yeah…I’m moving there 😉
Hope you enjoyed this list of 5 must-do adventures on Maui! Get plannin!
Can you add to the list?
Do you have must-do’s on the other Hawaiian islands?
Took place in my first indoor tri (Life Time Indoor Tri) ever this morning and it was too much fun! My kinda way to start a Sunday
Enjoy a lil recap of this crazy hour-long workout!
Swim – 10 minutes
We started out in the pool. Was a little nervous as this was my first time swimming in a pool competitively or for time. Everyone was super helpful and friendly, which helped to relax me a ton.
The “gun” went off and there we went. I started to feel a lot for comfortable and confident as I went. I did struggle to maintain breathing on my left side too. I am MUCH more dominant on my right but I wanted to make it a point to include my left. Well once you get in to it your workout – intentions kinda fly out the window ha.
I completed 20 lengths or 10 laps. Not sure if that is good or not – but hey better than sleeping in, right? I’ll take it!
Transition 1 – 10 minutes
I felt we had plenty of time in T1. I was toying with wearing my tri suit during the whole event but am SO happy I did not. I chose to wear my swimsuit during the swim and change into my tri suit for the bike and run. Such a good call and would highly recommend this. It would not have been fun to be soaking wet for a 30 min indoor bike ride. Hellooo you’re not drying off like outside!
Bike – 30 minutes
Oh the bike. My biggest weakness. Started out kinda just having fun with it. Ya know – Snapchatting, selfies, chatting…gotta have fun with it, right?
Ok maybe I should’ve taken it more seriously. I struggle on the bike and simply need to put in more time. Much more time. Planning to make the bike much more of a focus and priority this year.
Transition 2 – 5 minutes
Pretty much just had to unclip the bike shoes, slip on the running shoes, and head on upstairs (yes – UPstairs OWW!).
Run – 20 minutes
Started out at an aggressive 8 MPH but after 5 mins realized I couldn’t maintain that. I am not in my best shape right now and am smart enough to know what pace I can feasibly maintain and last. I fluctuated between 7.5-7.6 for most of the run but started picking it up with 5 minutes to go. With 3 mins to go I was at 8 again…2 mins 8.5…1 min 9…30 seconds 9.5. Yes, I am a freak and like increasing in increments of .5. It really bugged me when I was at 7.6 HA! Stop judging.
After the tri we headed to the cafe for free smoothies – and they were delish!
Overall, I had a really good time at my first indoor tri. If anything it is an awesome way to start a Sunday and I would love to do this type of workout a lot more often. Keeps ya fresh during the winter season!
2015 was a big year. From first-time athletic events and personal records to career aspirations and following my passions – I am proud of myself for accomplishing so much more than I thought possible.
Thought I’d continue the tradition of highlighting my year via photos from my 2014 Highlights post with an even more jam-packed 2015.

Super excited and finally ready to work on my technique – especially before moving to Colorado.
I found a contact at the YWCA who offered to give me private lessons before joining a Masters team. So grateful for the help before making a dink outta myself!
My instructor took one look at my form and said, “Hmm…ok. Not bad. But let’s start from the beginning and deconstruct your stroke”. YIKES!
We started out by simply observing my swim technique, Quickly realized we need to take a few steps back! I think it’s a brilliant idea to deconstruct my stroke from the beginning. I have never taken lessons so I basically taught myself how to swim and I KNOW I am not performing as efficiently as I can.
I started out by using flippers so I would be forced to only mostly use my arms. I first started by only breathing on the right and arms were outstretched with hand in a fist (left arm forward, right arms back). This helped make sure I was holding my head in neck in the right position when I breathe. We then moved to the left. SO awkward as I’ve only ever breathed on my right. I know that this is the perfect opportunity to go back and work on the left though.

I am not sure why I waited so long to get a TWO piece training swimsuit. My ONE piece is absolutely atrocious. Ugly colors, unflattering, out of style, uncomfortable…yeah pretty much a hot mess.
We should feel AMAZING when we workout. Why not dress the part?!
I freaking love my Coeur Sports Bikini in Femme Fatale Design. Opposite from everything my former one piece is. Fresh design, flattering, IN style, and oh so comfortable.

Do you feel this same way about your athletic attire?
What is YOUR fav training swimsuit?
Do you guys also struggle with overeating on many occasions? I swear Pringles got it right with their motto “Once you pop you can’t stop!”. If you’ve ever seen me around a can of Pringles then you know this is way too true. YIKES.
I also know my portion control can be out of hand as well. Once I’m hungry and start eating and can be hard for me to know when to stop. Do I really need another serving or those extra bites? I was definitely raised with the “one more serving I don’t want leftovers!” outlook. Love you mom and dad! 😉
When the opportunity presenting itself to team up with MealEnders I had to see what all the fuss was about. They’ve been featured in MensFitness.com, Food + Wine, About.com, FastCompany, and many others lately so I just had to see for myself. Let’s be real here folks – I’m not one to believe in something until I actually experience it to see first-hand
