So crazy to think I’ve been playing the sport of soccer since I was 4 years old – more than 27 years! Needless to say it has been a huge part of my life with SO many amazing memories.
From trying to get that ball away from Dave at Keliix, full club traveling tournaments, grueling indoor winter practices working on skill-work, 2-3 a days, playing in the Metrodome Jr and Sr year of high school, and going on to play for the UMD Bulldogs – soccer was MY LIFE!

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Practices were HARD. Getting and staying in “soccer shape” is insane. I’ve heard you sprint between 5-7/game, which is no joke! It was more than the endurance though. For Keliix – it was skill. Our club coach is an amazing soccer player from Nigeria, who was also like our second dad. The countless hours spent on tedious drills really helped our club stand apart from the rest and we owe it all to him.
We may not have won every game but we sure dominated the vast majority of them. I would much rather control and outplay the team than win off of a fluke, undeserved goal. Ok – maybe I still want to win – but I want to deserve it too!
I did have countless ankle injuries but am so thankful to never have a knee injury – or worse.
I continue to play year-round women’s league but at this point I need to hang the ol cleats up. The injuries I’ve witnessed are not worth it to me right now. I am pumped for the future and have too many “goals” to let an injury hold me back. Perhaps I’ll change my mind in the future as I cannot imagine going too long without my main sport – but thank you to all the soccer folks I’ve crossed paths with.
The sport of soccer is filled with discipline, endurance, and most important – teamwork!
What was your main sport of choice growing up? Do you still play? Have your athletic interests evolved?
