Last Monday (which so happened to be Memorial Day ha) I had the chance to participate in my first athletic event race since moving to Colorado – BolderBOULDER 10K! And let me tell you – it did NOT disappoint!
I had no idea what I was in store for. I was picturing your every day, run a the mill 10K race but boy was I mistaken. As we neared closer to the event I heard more and more of what was involved – and I got more excited.
According to Running USA, BolderBOULDER was the third-largest running race in the United States in 2015 (followed by Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta and New York City Marathon). It is also the seventh-largest in the world, and was named the all-time best 10K by Runner’s World.
When my company (Orangetheory Fitness) offered to sponsor me if I rocked our new Performance clothing line of course I jumped at the opportunity. Wearing super cute, comfy workout clothes to do what I love best? BOKAY!
The day started bright and early heading to Boulder to park. Definitely made sure to allow enough time as I had heard how many people attend this event. Holy smokes was the city packed!! The start line was nuts but actually well organized. They were pretty strict about starting in your specific wave. Well – you could obviously start in your wave or any time after. Since we started with 3 of us we had to jump back a bit. Ah well!
You know you’re in for a good day when the couple in front of you is dressed as eggs n bacon and you stop for a mimosa less than a mile in to the run! Ziiing!
Of course I brought my GoPro along to capture some silly, fun footage. Can’t wait to put that bad boy into a video! Gosh I’ve said that for WAY too long but I have SO much sweet footage I really need to sit down and learn how to do it. Any helpers out there?
But I’ll give you a lil tease of what the footage includes: mimosas, slip n slides, belly dancers, garage bands, dancing Doritos, marshmallow tosses, beer, water guns, foam fingers, creative signs, bag pipers, jumping, flexing, people watching…and a little bit of running.
The finish line did not disappoint. You finished by running around the track of the University of Colorado at Folsom Field. My what an beautiful stadium and super fun finish!
After the race we gathered in the stands to watch the pro racers come in – my goodness golly they are quick!
But, the highlight of the day was the emotional Memorial Day tribute, consisting of fighter jet flyovers, parachuters donning each flag of the military and the final one a HUGE American flag. Definitely thought of my dad during the Marine’s tribute and everything he sacrificed for his country fighting in Vietnam.
With over 52,000 runners and 70,000 spectators we were bound to have a crazy, fun time. And a few free beers in the sunshine made for a perfect Memorial Day.
Happy to call BolderBOULDER 10K race my first athletic event in Colorado. Awww. Now – time to get serious 😉
