Hoooly smokes in a hand-basket you guys! Guess what today is?! Ok shoots, brah I’ll tell you…
Today marks SIX MONTHS that I’ve lived on Maui. Like WOAH. When did that happen?? Welp – about 6 months ago sillyyy.
Quick background story: Lived in Minnesota my whole life until finally deciding to move to my life-long crush state of Colorado at the age of 31. But – during that time I visited Maui and felt “at home”. I still made the move to Colorado as planned but couldn’t get the island outta my heart. I knew I didn’t want to have any regrets. I decided “live once” “now or never” and that I could always come back to CO if it just wasn’t for me. So after 7 months of living in Colorado I officially made the move to Maui September 30th, 2016!
SO much has happened in the last half a year. I’m gonna have to break this up by month! Ooofta!
Arrival: September 30th
I said goodbye to my amazing parents at the airport after our crazy, fun adventure driving from Minnesota to Los Angeles. Car was ready to be shipped and I was semi-ready to board the plane. Oh man was it tough saying goodbye. Tearing up writing this crap. Ahhh.
When I landed on Maui I was greeted with a fresh lei by my buddy Sean. And I about cried (again). Actually I totally teared up. What a thoughtful gesture to meet me at the airport, help me with my bags, and simply made sure I was welcomed and settled. Felt the aloha spirit already!
Month 1: October
My awesome roomie, her man, and their friends took me under their wing. We had WAY too much fun that first weekend!
That next weekend I was already leaving my new home for a different island. I had in fact based my whole move to Maui on being able to hop over to the Big Island in time for the Ironman World Championship in Kona. Mission = success.
When I got back to Maui I was ready to hit the ground running. I found out I had landed two jobs I had interviewed for! Group Fitness Instructor at Body in Balance and Zipline Guide with Skyline Eco-Adventures! Man did I feel like a lucky ducky! Came to Maui with no job and was kinda freaking out (like a lot). Very grateful to both places for taking a chance on a newbie to the island.
Before officially starting my jobs I sure had fun enjoying the water!!
And of course a few land activities…
Then it was already the end of October, which meant – Xterra World Championship! How awesome to experience TWO triathlon world championships within one month?!
Zipline guide training, blacklight yoga, and Babe-raham Halloween rounded out October. And that’s just the first month. I know – ooofta.
Month 2: November
The roomie and I had a chance to go on the snorkel boat again and this time see a bunch of amazing creatures!
Training and shadowing wrapped up with zipline guiding and I was starting to get in my groove with it. But – I noticed Skyline was looking for social media help and of course I became intrigued. That’s my background. That’s clearly my passion. More to come…
Even through working two jobs I still found time to enjoy our island. You HAVE to or what’s the point of being here? I explored Twin Falls and got my butt kicked by the Bamboo Forest. A whooole other blog post.
To complete November, the roommate and I hosted “Friendsgiving” at our place. It felt so nice to have good friends to share the first Turkey Day away from the fam with.
Two months down!
Month 3: December
I found out I was officially offered a full-time social media position with Skyline but would not start until after the first of the year. I continued to guide and put in a few hours of social “prep work” each week to ensure I was ready to hit the ground runnin!
Enjoyed a few Skyline events getting to know the team a bit more: Island Art Party painting and ‘Ulalena (a must-see on Maui).
Had awesome roomie bonding time hiking to “The Cross” in Wailuku, exploring Upcountry and Maui Wine, and bringing her as my date to our Skyline holiday party!
Not gonna lie – Christmas was absolutely horrible for me. I missed my family SO freaking much. Every time I would Facetime with them I would start bawling. Can you guys plllease come to Maui next Christmas?! Like – pretty please??
It did help to get very special, thoughtful gifts from them. Who am I kidding – I cried harder! Sad and happy tears though!
Was going to spend NYE alone sulking in my silly misery but a friend invited me over last minute for a chill eve. Just what I needed.
A quarter year in weee doggies!!
Month 4: January
For the whole month I decided NO ALCOHOL. And man was I productive!
Started my dream job on January 2nd. To promote a brand I’ve completed fallen for? BOKAY!
I decided I would do something active every day. This includes swimming, biking, running, yoga, hiking, surfing, kayaking – whatever! And that promise I sure kept!
Also started CrossFit for the first time and helped start a Sunday Runday crew!
Also had a blast exploring very different parts of the island!
I also started “My Monday Motivator” blog series!
Month 5: February
February started with two last-minute races
Run for the Whales 10k – My first official race on Maui was quite the success! Placed 1st in my age group and 3rd overall female whaaat? I’ve never placed in my life! The prize was a whale watch tour for 2…that I still have to use…and whale season is about over. Hmm. I have a year to use it so will have to take advantage next year!
Bubble Run 5k – Oh what a fun concept! Was not really a “running” race at all! Just a great excuse to get out and enjoy the day with friends/fam playing in foam pits ha!
I’ve come to learn how incredible Maui really is. There are so many climates and environments on this one small island. One area I truly love is Upcountry. It is the chance to escape the heat and breathe in the fresh air. So much nature to explore there!
Right when I was feeling pretty homesick and missing familiar faces that KNOW me – a few friends popped into town to turn my frown upside down!!
(Why the above photos are small I have NO idear. Grr. Help!)
Also had the chance to be kids out on our Ka’anapali course! We shot photos, videos, live videos, drone footage, and simply had a blast doing it! This job is ROUGH!!
“My Monday Motivator’s” for Feb:
1 more month of awesome re-cap. Almost there! 😉
Month 6: March
March started amazingly when I moved into my very own place in Kihei – the place I always wanted to be. I was drawn to this beachy town from the moment I visited. I am SO happy I started in Wailuku and had awesome roomies and met my CrossFit crew…but I really feel at home here. Helps to have my own place as I work remote and need to spread out all my crap. Felt pretty annoying when I had roomies.
Skyline is all about community, culture, and conservation and one event we take part in is Trilogy’s Blue ‘Aina campaign. I was fortunate to attend this year and had an absolute blast sailing, snorkeling, cleaning up the reefs, and learning more about Hawaiian Native Birds (we chose Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project to donate $1,000 to).
My friend Catalina made me all pretty
Before ruining it running ha. But joined the Valley Isle Road Runners (VIRR) who run every Wednesday eve in Kihei! Excited to run with this group every week!
I feel like I was barely in my new place during my first month as I had the chance to do a bit of traveling!
San Diego for Social Media Marketing World
Final “My Monday Motivator’s” for 6 months in!
I told you “ooofta” didn’t I?
But after six months I sometimes catch myself saying “Shoots, brah, I’m craving loco moco or spam musubi! Dakine grinds. So ono!” Whaaat? I think my Minnesota accent is turning part-Pigeon. And I love it
Maui Nō Ka ʻOi = Maui is the best!
